Review this week's message.

Key Thought:

Forgiveness is as much for you as for the other person.

Key Quote

“The number one tool the devil will use to stop you is offense.” – Pastor Bil Cornelius

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.
  • Where do you want to retire?
  • What was the first concert you attended? What was the last?
  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Start thinking. Ask a thoughtful question.
  • What stuck out to you from this week’s message?
  • “hurt people, hurt people.” Does knowing that the person that hurt you is also suffering change the way you view forgiveness?
  • Forgiveness does not mean renewed trust or reconciliation. Can you think of an example from your own life that you forgave but didn’t reconcile?

Start sharing. Choose questions that create openness.
  • “If you’re waiting for an apology from the person that hurt you, you’ll be waiting forever.” Is there anyone in your life that you have been waiting for an apology from before forgiving them?
  • Has unforgiveness caused you pain or held you back at any point in your life? How did so?
  • Who (if anyone) do you need to forgive? What has been holding you back?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

Dear Jesus, you know the pain I have been through and I trust you to heal the hurts I have experienced. Help me forgive the people that have caused my pain. Amen.

Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.

Is there anyone that came to mind during this message that you need to forgive? This week, ask God to help you choose forgiveness and allow Him to begin healing your heart.

Scriptures

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32

But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:15

See to  it...that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.  Hebrews 12:14b-15a

Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.  Philippians 3:13-14

Love... keeps no record of being wronged.  1 Cor 13:5

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!  In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.  Matthew 5:44-45

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.  The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 22:3

“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.  Luke 3:8

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.  Romans 12:18-21

“The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.  Sounds of terror are in his ears; While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.”  Job 15:20

All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face.  Psalm 44:15

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Ephesians 6:11-13

Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.  1 Timothy 1:5
